How Do You Know If Dentures Fit Properly?

A denture can fit the shape of the mouth yet still move. Simon makes a useful distinction between fit and retention, which is how well it stays in place.

Fit describes the contact with your mouth

Gaps, pressure areas or overextended borders may mean the fitting surface needs attention. A clinician may use a checking material inside the denture to see where it contacts the tissues and where space remains.

Retention describes stability in use

Saliva, the shape of the supporting ridge, muscle movement and remaining teeth can all influence retention. A denture is not necessarily badly made simply because a difficult mouth gives it limited support. Equally, staying in place does not prove every part fits correctly.

Explain both comfort and movement

Tell Simon whether the appliance presses, rocks, drops or lifts during speaking or eating. These details guide a fuller assessment. The answer may involve an adjustment, a reline or another way to improve support. Do not judge the whole fit by suction alone or try to reshape the borders yourself.
