New dentures can feel unfamiliar, and some people develop a pressure spot after they start eating with them. Simon explains why a fitting review is an important part of the process.
The mouth moves under pressure
An impression captures the mouth at a particular moment. Eating and speaking bring moving muscles and soft tissues into play. A rigid denture can then press more in one area than another, even if it felt comfortable at the fitting appointment.
Small adjustments can matter
The clinician can examine the tissues and how the teeth meet, then make controlled changes where needed. This is different from removing material at random or repeatedly trimming away the fitting surface.
Do not persevere through significant pain
Contact the clinic if the denture is rubbing, cutting or stopping you from eating. Ask what to do while waiting and whether to wear it before your review. You should not deliberately make a severe ulcer worse. Some follow-up adjustments are common, but continuing pain is a reason for help, not a test of how well you tolerate dentures.
