Questions to ask before extractions for an immediate denture

An immediate denture is planned before the teeth it replaces are removed. That makes the conversation before extraction particularly important. You need to understand the surgical care, the temporary changes during healing and the likely denture maintenance afterwards.

Ask who coordinates the stages

Find out who takes records, who removes the teeth and who fits and reviews the appliance. Confirm what happens if extraction dates change. A denture being available does not mean the extraction should proceed without a clear plan for the dental treatment itself.

Understand the limits of the preview

When teeth remain in the positions being replaced, a complete trial of the final appearance may not be possible. Ask what can be checked in advance and what uncertainty remains. Bring preferences and photographs early rather than waiting until the fitting day.

Plan for healing

The mouth changes after extraction, so the initial fit may need review and further work. Ask about adjustments, relines and eventual replacement, including their costs. Do not assume the first appliance is the permanent end point of treatment.

Get aftercare before the day

Ask for the specific wearing, removal, cleaning and bleeding instructions from the treating team. General advice about leaving dentures out overnight may have a short-term exception immediately after extraction. Follow your own clinician's instructions rather than choosing a timetable from another patient's experience. Know whom to contact urgently if there is uncontrolled bleeding, increasing swelling or difficulty breathing or swallowing. A coordinated plan should cover the first night as well as the finished smile.
